Silver Bells Hat and Scarf

I'm so pleased with my hat and scarf set, I decided to write the pattern out for future reference, in case I want to make them again. Then I thought, well, if I'm already writing it down, why not go beyond the chicken scratch notes I usually make and then find myself unable to decipher, and do it up all proper-like and put it up here?

So first - the bell lace pattern. A variation on a pattern I found in an old library book and then failed to make a note of the title or author. But it appears on page 225.

LACE PATTERN:
Multiple of 17 stitches, plus 2. Repeat from * to *.
Row 1: P2, *YO, knit2tog, YO, knit2tog 3 times, K2, YO, K3, YO, SSK, YO, P2*
Row 2 and all wrong side rows: Knit the knit stitches (gutter stiches), purl the purl stitches (lace pattern).
Row 3: P2, *YO, knit2tog, knit3tog twice, YO, K1, YO, K2, SSK, YO, SSK, YO, P2*
Row 5: P2, *YO, knit4tog, YO, K3, YO, K2, SSK, YO, SSK, YO, P2*
Row 7: P2, *YO, knit2tog, YO, K1, YO, K2, SSK, YO, K2, SSK, YO, SSK, YO, P2*
Row 9: P2, * YO, knit2tog, YO, K 3, YO, K2, SSK 3 times, YO, SSK, YO, P2*
Row 11: P2, * YO, knit2tog, YO, knit2tog, K2, K1, YO, SSSK twice, SSK, YO, P2*
Row 13: P2, * YO, knit2tog, YO, knit2tog, K2, YO, K3, YO, SSSSK, YO, P2*
Row 15: P2, *YO, knit2tog, YO, knit2tog, K2, YO, SSK, K2, YO, K1, YO, SSK, YO, P2*
Repeat rows 1 through 16 for pattern.

MATERIALS:
800 yards lace-weight cashmere or merino wool for scarf, 300 yards for hat, US size 2 needles (5 DPNs for hat, straights for scarf).

GAUGE:
36 stitches and 34 rows over 10 cms in lace pattern.

SCARF:
Cast on 70 stitches (four lace repeats).
I knit my scarf straight through - I didn't care if it was symmetrical, and I kept on knitting until one 800 yard skein was gone, which gave me 124 cms of scarf. If you want matching ends, knit 62 cms, leave stitches on holder, cast on again and repeat, then graft ends together. I did have enough yarn left over for grafting. I also didn't bother with any fancy edging - the purl stitch gutter looks just fine.

HAT:
Cast on 154 stitches on DPNs.
Work 5 rounds in purl 1, knit 1 rib.
Round 6: Purl 1, knit 1, repeat to last 2 stitches, purl2tog. (153 stitches)
Round 7: Treating the last stitch of the previous round as the first stitch in the pattern, begin lace pattern.
Work 2.5 repeats of lace pattern, ending with Row 6 of pattern. (135 stitches).
Begin decreases:
Round 1: *Knit 7, knit2tog*, repeat to end of round.
Round 2: Knit all stitches.
Round 3: *Knit 6, knit2tog*, repeat to end of round.
Round 4: Knit all stitches.
Round 5: *Knit 5, knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Round 6: Knit all stitches.
Round 7: *Knit 4, knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Round 8: Knit all stitches.
Round 9: *Knit 3, knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Round 10: Knit all stitches.
Round 11: *Knit 2, knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Round 12: Knit all stitches.
Round 13: *Knit 1, knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Round 14: Knit all stitches.
Round 15: *Knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Round 16: Knit all stitches.
Round 17: *Knit2tog*, repeat to end.
Thread yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten off.

Enjoy!

Wow, they look beautiful! (By the way, I'm pretty sure the stitch pattern is Barbara Walker's Dayflower Lace.)

What a beautiful hat and scarf. Your cabled socks are lovely, too. You shouldn't worry so much about the toesies.
